Physical and Chemical Digestion


Physical digestion

Increases the surface area of the food.

  • Mechanically tearing up large food items into smaller pieces.
  • (No chemical reactions take place.)
  • Cutting up food, biting, chewing, churning, emulsification


Chemical digestion

  • Using enzymes to break up small items of food into simple, individual molecules.
  • (Chemical reactions take place.)
